The Buddy-Ex Clearance Rule

THE RULE

Do not pursue a close friend's serious ex without time, a direct conversation, and his clear approval.

WHAT THIS MEANS

A calendar alone cannot grant clearance. If the friendship matters, the awkward conversation is the admission price.

WHEN IT DOES NOT APPLY

1. The prior relationship was brief and the friend clearly gives approval
2. Many years have passed and no unresolved feelings remain
3. The friendship began only after both prior partners had fully moved on

EXAMPLES

• VIOLATION: You secretly begin dating your best friend's recent ex and let social media deliver the news.
• NO VIOLATION: Long after the breakup, you speak to him first and receive an honest green light.
