The Raised Pinky Rule

THE RULE

While drinking with male friends, keep the pinky with the rest of the hand unless the cup or your hand requires otherwise.

WHAT THIS MEANS

The beverage is not on trial; the unnecessary solo finger is. The Court cannot allow one digit to hold its own press conference.

WHEN IT DOES NOT APPLY

1. An injury or medical condition affects the hand
2. A tiny handle makes the grip necessary
3. Formal tea or a formal event makes the gesture part of the setting

EXAMPLES

• VIOLATION: You deliberately raise the pinky while drinking bottled water with the guys at a sports bar.
• NO VIOLATION: Your finger extends because a splint prevents it from bending.
